Functional differences:

Retarder: the main function of retarder is to delay the setting and hardening process of concrete, control the setting time of concrete, and extend its available time window. It is usually used in situations where delayed setting is required, such as large volume concrete, long-distance transportation of concrete, etc.

Differences in chemical composition:

Water reducing agents: Water reducing agents are generally organic compounds, such as polycarboxylate ethers, sulfonates, fatty alcohol ethers, etc. They react with the surface of cement particles to change the interaction force between cement particles to achieve water reduction effect.

Retarders: retarders mainly include sulfates, soluble oxides in cementitious materials, etc. They delay the hydration reaction by inhibiting the crystallization of hydration products formed during the cement hydration reaction, thereby achieving a retarding effect.
