What is bile acid chelating agent

Cholic acid chelator is a drug used to treat specific types of cholesterol metabolism disorders, such as primary bile acid synthesis deficiency and intrahepatic cholestasis. These diseases may lead to a decrease in bile acid synthesis or impaired function in the body, thereby affecting cholesterol metabolism and bile secretion.

Cholic acid is a naturally occurring bile acid that plays an important role in the digestion process, helping to break down and absorb fatty foods. Cholic acid chelators form complexes by binding with free cholic acid in the body, thereby preventing the absorption of cholic acid by the intestine. In this way, bile acid chelators can increase the demand for bile acid synthesis in the liver, promote the breakdown of cholesterol into bile acid, and thereby reduce cholesterol levels in the blood.

Common bile acid chelator drugs include cholestyramine (phenylcholic acid resin), colesevelam (colesevelam), and colestipol (coleximol). These drugs are usually supplied in powder or tablet form and need to be taken together with water or other liquids.

Cholic acid chelators, when used under the guidance of a doctor, can help control cholesterol levels, reduce cholesterol absorption, and potentially reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, the specific usage method, dosage, and course of treatment should be determined based on individual circumstances and doctor's advice. Please consult a doctor for more information on bile acid chelators and the correct use methods.
